Technology Comes to Darwin

FF

Humans have a passion for communication and over the last 100 years or more we have invented a vast array of different communication media. Today messages are pushed down pipes, bounced off satellite dishes and travel invisibly through the air. We have burned messages into tin, wax, shellac, vinyl, plastic, photographically printed them and magnetically and mathematically encoded them.

Discussion

The telegraph is one of the earliest media for communicating messages. It used a language called Morse code. What is Morse code and how did it work?

What was the first message on the overland telegraph line?

The telegraph was eventually superseded by the invention of the telephone. Why?

What were the advantages of the telephone over the telegraph?

Who invented the telephone and when did it come into common usage?

Case Number Two

Open Word, go to New and Templates On This Computer and select your “Reciprocal Teaching Worksheet” Template. We are going to write while we read.
Because we are not reading for pleasure, we are reading for meaning.

Now go to this website
[http://www.urbanext.uiuc.edu/gpe/case2/index.html]
and complete the template while you read the first two sections of Case Number Two.
Those sections are:
Four Components of Soil - Soil Types - if you have time also complete Nutrients from the Soil.
Use a new template to start on Nutrients from the Soil Please.

Remember to skim the target pages and then write a prediction and support for making those statements.
Use title, headings, bold text and images to assist you.
The main ideas are short key ideas, it is important that you do not copy/paste.
Use your own language where possible.
Remember that writers often use the first part of a paragraph to indicate what the paragraph is about.
Remenber to clarify before you write your summary.
The summary should come from the main points. Use them as a guide to the structure of the summary.
An hour should about cover the assignment.
Save the word document as Reading_TheGreatPlantEscape_CaseTwo_01.
We are going to be growing our own plants soon so you need this information to become a good plant friend.

Top Five Questions

Einstein once said that if you gave him an hour to solve a problem, and his life depended on getting the right answer, he would spend 55 minutes figuring out what questions to ask. "For if I knew the proper questions," he said, "I could solve the problem in less than 5 minutes."

We live in challenging and complex times. No one knows all THE answers, but everyone holds a piece of the answer. I need your help to come up with the 5 "most important questions in the world right now."

Add your questions and then we will vote and select the top ten from everyone's "possibles".

The five most important questions in the world today, for me are:
