Food For Thought

A field of canola in bloom. Farmers are divided about the Government's decision to allow genetically modifed crops.
WESTERN District farmers have welcomed a Victorian Government decision to drop a moratorium on genetically-modified canola. Opponents, however, said the move would commit the nation to GM contamination.
What do you think? Should Victorian farmers grow GM food? Please support your opinions with supporting details.

NO, they should not be allowed the privilege of growing GM foods because anything could happen, it could work or it could blow up the world!!! who knows?

Hey Mr.n it tasha,

I do not recommend GM(Genetically- modified), because it is not going to stay just in Victoria.. it will go air born and spread through out Australia.

GM is like cane toads, scientists say it will be taken under control and won't cause any harm. That's what they say when it is planted and released then trouble beginnings, it will start to spread and soon we will have to make new poisons to control it.

There are no proven test that shows that it is safe to eat or use GM in our food, they have done tests on rats before, but who knows what happened to them. Many scientists won’t tell us if it is safe or not if they are getting paid lots of money or if they are working for a company.

So no I do not agree on letting GM be used in Australia.

I think that genetically - modified canola should not be allowed in Australia. I believe this because if the plants are sprayed with canola extract they will become herbicide and pesticide resistant, and all the weeds near by will as well. Also any crops within a 3 kilometer radius of the sprayed crop will be affected. Scientists have experimented on rats, and have found that eating these canola extracts could cause stunted grow. For those reasons I believe that genetically - modified canola should not be brought into Australia.

I think that farmers should not grow genetically modified foods because:

* The foods and crops will become superweeds.

* They will become resistant to pesticides and herbicides.

* Scientists have done studies on rats, and they have found that gm foods, could possibly cause stunted growth.

Genes, canola and the health concerns

Victoria should not be able to grow genetically modified food and plants because anything could happen any time, it will destroy Australians way of living. It could blow up the world, anything could happen. It’s too risky to attempt it until we actually know what will happen. It could turn out great, no one knows yet.

Hi Mr N this is Ashleigh D
i disagree that they should be aloud to use canola to grow food. it will help grow food but it will also make it air bound and spread canola everywhere, and while its air bound it can go to weeds and make them resistant to the poison. CYA

Ben.....

Hey Mr...N, I think that they should not allow GM foods in Australia until they have done a lot more testing.

It opens a greater health risk to the Australian people.

Hey mr. N its keith.

i think we should not let people grow gentically modified foods in australia because it is a great health risk!! they should test this for safety before they just allow it.

hi Mr N this is Amy P
and I disagree that they should be allowed to use conola (rapeseed), yes it will help the farmer with crops and weed killing but what if the weeds get this when the conola gets air bound then the weeds will be resistance to sprays like the mosquitoes and not only will the conola spread to weeds when air bound but will travele to other states and it might not be safe for us because they haven't done any long term test so they need to prove their point, and the rats that they tested (which wasn't a long term one)we don't know if they made it, only the rats do.
