Darwin was founded in 1869 and was originally called Palmerston before being renamed Port Darwin in 1911. The harbour was discovered in 1839 by the Captain of the Beagle, John Lort Stokes, who named it after a former shipmate, British evolutionist Charles Darwin.

Wagiman is an Australian Aboriginal language spoken in Australia's Northern Territory. At the moment there are about ten people who speak Wagiman, mostly old people. Wagiman belongs to what linguists call the non-Pama-Nyungan language family.

It is widely assumed that the first human presence in the South Atlantic Falkland Islands was European, yet Hawkins in 1594 noted a populated island with “many Fires” and Darwin observed in 1834 that canoes were among the driftwood on the Falklands, presumably having come from Tierra del Fuego.

I’m an aboriginal

Not much technology.
They would have saw feet from walking around bare footed.
I would have taken ages to travel without cars.
No cyclone proof stuff.
There houses would have been wood and sticks.

In the 1860's

The first aboriginals in Darwin belonged to the Larrakia. The first European contact was in the 1860s. Back then life would have been so different because there would be no roads or cars. No AFL, different currency and no computers.

Wagiman belongs to what linguists call the non-Pama-Nyungan language family. Within that family, it appears to fall into the Gunwinyguan language group, but it is not closely related to any other Aboriginal languages.

We present palaeoecological evidence of burning from East Falkland dating back to before 4780±80 and raise the possibility of humanly caused fires.

Wagiman is the first language spoken in the northern territory. The group it is in the non-Pama-Nyungan language family.

European settlement began in Darwin in the 1860s.

Life back in the 1860s was much different from today. The threat of cyclones was more devastating because the use of cyclone coded houses wasn't around back then. Most settlers were prisoners. Life would have been harder than the southern parts as it is hotter and more humid in Darwin. Also there is more of a threat from crocodiles in the NT.

How long was the first Eropean settlement started in Darwin area?

The history of the Northern Territory began over 40,000 years ago when Indigenous Australians settled the region. Makassan traders began trading with the indigenous people of the Northern Territory for trepang from at least the 18th century onwards, and possibly for 300 years prior to that, while the coast of the Territory was first seen by Europeans in the 17th century. The British were the first to attempt to settle the coastal regions of the Territory in the 19th century; however no attempt was successful until the establishment of a settlement at Port Darwin in 1869.
