The first few days we will be getting the laptops configured to use the network so the students have access to the internet, printing and file sharing. We will also be setting up the standard classroom operating system configurations to ensure that all students have a similar working environment.

To that end students need to bring to school only the following items:

Each day of the holidays try to keep a PowerPoint journal. Have a technology section, where you select images, videos or web sites that interest you. Have an environmental section where you identify something at your home or a place you visit and identify what makes it special to you. Write a fictional story about any topic you like and use the PowerPoint slides as chapters. Illustrate your story with drawings you scan into the computer, digital pictures you take with your digital camera or find interesting images on the web that you can mash up into your own ideas.

If you visit somewhere interesting do a complete report on going there including interviewing people who you meet there. If you don’t go anywhere pick a place you would like to visit one day and do a report on that place, with interviews of imaginary people who have visited there. Do a family portrait, including images of your family, descriptions of what they like to do, interviews if possible (including any pets) and where possible include info and images of your grandparents as well.

Take up the challenge of learning to do something new and make a documentary of your journey: writing about how you succeeded and how you needed to work harder, what you did, or what you should have done and what you could have done differently. Include interviews with other people who are learning as well or have already done what you are learning to achieve.

Record a voice narration for each PowerPoint slide using Audacity (free download) (wav files only). Now turn the PowerPoint into a movie (Windows Movie Maker) (free download, but only runs on Windows XP or Vista) and add music and additional narration.

Come to school prepared to show your PowerPoint.

OK Keith has done an excellent job of trying to determine what these old things are by trying to think through what they could be and then research those possibilities.

It is hard to Google for non word ideas so you have to convert the image into words and then have a look at images of old versions of those words.

At first it is hit or miss but as you get better so do your guesses, after all most of these old things gave rise to the new versions sitting in your home right now.

Small Steps To Success

You have found out what activities you do after school. You have considered how these activities affect you in the long term and the short term. Let’s have a look at the activities that have short term, as well as, long term beneficial effects. Your new assignment will be to set a short term goal and break it up into manageable small steps. As an example, lets use learning how to play an instrument as one of your activities. Now I want you to set a new short term goal such as learning a new song. Then identify the small steps you would need to take to reach that goal. Let’s say you decided it would take five days practising 20 minutes per day to reach the goal. You have identified the goal and identified a possible series of small steps to reach that goal. Of course it would now be up to you to monitor your practise each day and see how you were going. You might find it didn’t take that long or you needed to add another practise session. You would need to review your progress and make any changes as required. Another possibility to consider is the fun run. How would you prepare for the day you have to walk or run around the school? Break your goal into small steps. You now have a pretty good understanding of what you actually do between the end of school and bedtime each day. From your activity log, you have generated a complete list of your activities. From your action plan, you have found out how adding a new activity may or may not affect all of your other activities. Now for a new set of assignments, once again all base on your activity logs. If your activity logs are not up to date, this would be a good time see if your activities are the same or have changed. These assignments should be based on your current activities.

Assignment one: Count the number of activities that you do each school day. Make a table identifying the day of the week and the total number of activities for that day.

Assignment two: Sort the activities into one of these categories: Educational, Sporting, Home Responsibilities, Leisure, Other. It may be helpful to complete this activity as a table.

Assignment three: It will be interesting to see how your activity types are balanced each day. For each type of activity determine the total amount of time each day you spend engaged in doing them. Now let’s compare the findings. Design a visually appealing way of presenting your findings. If I were to design a comparison of my work time vs play time, I might draw two glasses of water, one almost full one almost empty, or an elephant and a mouse on a see-saw. Make sure you have a comparison of all the categories compared to each other.

Assignment four: Make a table with two headings. In one heading put your name, in the other heading put your parent’s name. In each table, prioritise the activities. In your column prioritise them according to your preferences and in your parent’s column prioritise them according to how you think they would prioritise them. Only check with your parents after you have completed their column to see how you did. You can make any changes then. Answer these questions based on this information. What determined your priority ranking? What were the top two activities? Ask your parents what determined their ranking priorities. What were their top two activities? How many and which activities ended being the same for both you and your parents. Please explain why your list may be different than the list of your parents. If you are not sure ask them.

For an example: activity=eating candy-possible short term benefits=tastes so good; possible short term harm=tooth decay; possible long term benefit=candy makers get rich; possible long term harm=diet deficiencies and or overweight. This is an example from my point of view only. Ask your parents for advice if you are not sure how your activities will affect you.

Create a Pie Graph of Your Activity Log

Go to the Create a Graph web site at the National Center for Education Statistics and use the online graphing tool to graph your top 10 activities as a pie graph. Download it as a jpeg file so you can insert it into a word document describing your activities for a couple of weeks. Keep it on hand so you can repeat the process in a month to see how your activities may have changed.

From the Activity Logs you have completed, you have the data necessary to complete the next stage of the homework. You need to choose two of the activities. Choose one activity you think you might do too much of and one activity you don’t do enough of. List the reasons why you spend the amount of time on them that you do. List the benefits from doing them. List the disadvantages of doing them. How does doing them affect all the other activities you have listed on your Activity Logs? Make a list of all the activities that keep you healthy. Make another list of all the activities that help you learn. Make a list of all the activities that help you relax. Did you find that any lists have a lot of activities and any lists that have very few activities in them? Did you find that you had spare time so you could add a few new activities? If not why? Do you think that you have a good balance of healthy, relaxing and educational activities? What could you do if you do not? If you could add an educational activity what would it be and how could you find the time to include it? If you wanted to add a healthy activity what would it be and how could you make time to do it. Why am I not asking you about adding extra relaxing activities to your afternoon schedule? As you answer these questions, start thinking about adding a new educational activity of approximately 20 minutes per night. Make a list of five possible activities such as reading a novel, or keeping a diary that you can add to your daily list of things to do. Make a list of the problems that might interfere in you starting or completing this activity. What would be the benefits of doing the activity? What would be the disadvantages? Students need to develop a responsible attitude about how they organise their free time. They are becoming more independent and capable of understanding the consequences of their actions. Learning is not limited to school time. Hobbies, family chores, sporting activities, media and technology all can contribute to an exciting and time consuming life style. Students need to develop organisational and time management skills to take advantage of all that modern society has to offer, be a productive family member and grow as a human being into a healthy and confident member of society .In an attempt to avoid "the dog ate my homework" syndrome the homework assignments for my class will attempt to develop an independent and responsible attitude to personal growth for each individual student.

We will use class time to develop the materials necessary for the personal growth plans.
